Watch D.O.G.S. – Dads of Great Students

In 2013, Zimmerman and Wahpeton Elementary started a program called Watch D.O.G.S. Our goal is to encourage students’ fathers and father figures to volunteer in their child’s school. Research shows that when fathers are more involved in their children’s education, children benefit socially, physically, academically, and emotionally. 

When volunteering, you will spend a half a day at your child's school.  During that time you will be in your child’s classroom helping the teacher and students with activities such as reading to students (or being read to!), helping with math games, recess, gym activities, school projects, flashcards, and more. You will also have the opportunity to spend time in other classrooms so that more students can benefit from your presence as a positive role model. In addition, you will be able to have lunch with your child (a free lunch is provided).

Please note that Watch D.O.G.S. volunteers come for a half day.

AM: Arrive at 8:10 a.m. and leave after your child’s lunch.

PM: Arrive 10 minutes before your child’s lunch and stay until the end of the school day (3:05 p.m.).

3) Watch for a confirmation email.
You will receive an email approximately one week before your volunteer date confirming the details of your visit.

4) Show up and have fun!

 

What to Expect:  When you arrive, you will complete a short orientation to prepare you for the day. You will receive a schedule and map to help guide you throughout the school.  If you are volunteering in the morning, you will also be invited to participate in the morning announcements.  Typically Watch Dogs have the opportunity to help during gym, lunch, recess, in classrooms, and in other areas throughout the school. Our Watch D.O.G.S. volunteers consistently report that it is a fun and positive experience, not only for our students, but for themselves as well!
